Sunflowers Series: Books About Growing

PicMonkey Collage2

Now that the weather seems to be getting warmer and Spring is just around the corner I’m starting to think about our garden. It is a little sparse to say the least and very lacking in colour. What better time than to plant some flowers to brighten the place up? And, in my mind, there is no happier flower than the Sunflower! Over the next few weeks and months we will be planting some Sunflowers and using them to help us learn. Follow us in our Sunflower Series and Learn With Us!

Before we start diving into the planting, we have been looking at some books about planting and gardens during our story times recently;

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

As with other Eric Carle books the illustrations in this story are beautiful and capture little one’s attention and imaginations. The Tiny Seed tells the story of a seed being blown on it’s journey to find a place to grow, blossom into a big, beautiful flower and eventually disperse seeds of it’s own. For older children the book opens up lots of discussion about the life-cycle of the seed whereas younger ones can spot the seed on each page and begin to learn words associated with plants and growing.

Jasper’s Beanstalk by Mike Inkpen

Definitely one for little ones. It shows the process of planting in simple terms and emphasises the length of time that it takes for seeds to grow, which can be hard for little ones to grasp. Again, it’s brilliant at teaching gardening vocabulary as well as the days of the week.

Oliver’s Vegetables by Vivian French

Oliver explores his Grandfather’s garden and all the vegetables he grows, trying each one. A good book for pointing out all the gardening bits and bobs to reinforce vocabulary. It also has beautiful, bold illustrations.

Eddie’s Garden: and How to Make Things Grow by Sarah Garland

A lovely book that combines fact and fiction. It starts right form the beginning of gardening with Eddie, his mum and his sister venturing to the garden centre to choose their supplies just as we’ll be doing!DSC_0035

Peep Inside Animal Homes by Usbourne

This book isn’t specifically to do with growing but I thought it linked in well with the different natural habitats and the animals that live there. The illustrations are beautiful and the flaps provide lots of interest for little eyes and hands. There’s plenty to point out and talk about to help children to develop their vocabulary.

These are just a handful of books to read and explore gardening. Have a look in local libraries, books shops and charity shops to keep an eye out for books on the same topic!

As always, I love to see your own projects so be sure to share with me via twitter, instagram and facebook what you and your little learners have been up to by using the hashtag #wandrsunflowers!

Happy learning!
