As well as having a wonderful smell, coffee grounds provide some interesting texture to this play dough invitation. Unlike many play dough recipes, this one is child-made by providing the added coffee next to the play dough, helping to promote independence and precision.

To set up this simple invitation you will need:

  • A ball of plain play dough (using our no-cook recipe)
  • lightly soaked coffee grounds

S (2.6yrs) enjoyed carefully spooning the coffee grounds into a little hole in her dough.

She rolled and squashed the dough to incorporate the grounds evenly.

She was really interested in the smell of the coffee and kept giving it a sniff. We discussed that it was coffee and that Mummy and Daddy drink it. A lovely follow-on activity would be an invitation with pots and cups, coffee and water for her to brew her own coffee.

Once all of the coffee had been added to the dough, S practised rolling  it out and cutting shapes using the selection of metal cutters.

Coffee flavoured biscuits ready to go into the oven! This is S’s favourite play dough activity and play always leads to this when we’re using dough.
