Make an Autumn tree using play dough and loose parts!

We’ve been enjoying learning about Autumn lately with September right around the corner. One of my favourite books to read at this time of year is Ferdie and the Falling Leaves. I used to read it to my class at this time of year and now S (2.6yrs) enjoys it too.

We read the book and discussed the Autumn leaves, how they change colour and fall.

I set up a very simple invitation to play for S using play dough and glass pebbles. I made a simple play dough tree and pressed it onto the bottom of a tray. I actually used the coffee play dough that we made the other day as the colour was perfect for the bark of the tree but any play dough will work just as well.

I added a selection of yellow and red glass pebbles and orange and yellow beads to represent the different coloured leaves.

S was able to develop her fine motor skills by adding the glass pebbles one by one until the tree was full. And then, of course, she took them all of to begin again!

This activity was also a great prompt for discussion about Autumn and S loved recalling the autumn walk we took the other day in the forest and all of the leaves and pine cones we collected.

This activity could easily be adapted to suit different times of year too by using different coloured loose parts.
